Parliamentary commission selects Destry alongside Aida Budiman and Solikin Juhro for central bank leadership.

Indonesia is moving toward a new chapter in central bank leadership. The House of Representatives’ Commission XI has approved Destry Damayanti as Bank Indonesia governor for 2026–2031, placing an experienced central banker at the helm as Indonesia navigates rupiah pressures, global uncertainty, and questions over central bank independence.

Destry Approved as BI Governor
Commission XI of Indonesia’s House of Representatives approved Destry Damayanti as Bank Indonesia governor for the 2026–2031 period following a fit-and-proper test. Commission chairman Mukhammad Misbakhun said lawmakers reached the decision through consensus during an internal meeting, completing the commission-level selection process for the central bank’s new leadership.

Aida and Solikin Take Senior Positions
Alongside Destry, lawmakers selected Aida S. Budiman as senior deputy governor and Solikin M. Juhro as deputy governor, both for the same 2026–2031 period. Destry and Aida underwent their parliamentary assessments on August 26, while Solikin and fellow deputy governor candidate M. Anwar Bashori appeared before the commission on August 27.

Parliamentary Approval Still Required
The appointments are not yet fully finalized because the three selections must be endorsed by the full House of Representatives. Commission XI plans to submit its decisions to a DPR plenary session on September 1, 2026, after which the leadership transition can proceed through the remaining formal process.

Destry Pledges Growth Without Sacrificing Independence
During her confirmation process, Destry emphasized that stronger cooperation between Bank Indonesia and the government would not undermine the central bank’s independence. She argued that Indonesia’s increasingly complex economic environment requires institutional coordination while each institution continues exercising its own mandate and policy instruments, a balance closely watched by investors following Perry Warjiyo’s unexpected resignation in July.

New Leadership Faces Major Economic Test
Destry would assume the governorship as Indonesia manages pressure on the rupiah, global capital movements, fiscal concerns, and the government’s ambition to accelerate economic growth. She has served as Bank Indonesia’s senior deputy governor since 2019 and became interim governor following Warjiyo’s departure, providing continuity during a leadership transition that has attracted significant attention from financial markets.

Destry Damayanti’s selection provides greater clarity over Bank Indonesia’s leadership after a period of uncertainty. For Indonesians, the new leadership team’s ability to protect price and currency stability while supporting sustainable economic growth will directly affect businesses, borrowers, and households. For Singaporeans, policy stability at Indonesia’s central bank matters because of the deep investment, financial, and trade connections between Southeast Asia’s largest economy and Singapore.
