A workplace quarrel turned violent, leaving one man hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury.
A verbal dispute between two security officers at Lucky Plaza escalated into a brutal assault that left one man with a serious brain injury and another sentenced to jail. The assailant will serve a seven-month sentence and must pay compensation for the harm caused.
Assault Followed Workplace Argument
On June 15, 2024, a routine workday turned violent at Lucky Plaza, Orchard Road, when a dispute between two security officers escalated into a physical attack. The accused, 44-year-old Mohd Razali Mohamed Sarip, confronted his 52-year-old colleague over work-related checks, leading to a verbal altercation.

Despite the older officer rejecting Razali’s challenge to a fight, tensions remained high. After their shift ended at 8pm, Razali followed the victim, identified only as V1, toward Tangs Plaza.
Brutal Attack And Collapse
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sivaranjini Pillai Eliathamby described how Razali, still harboring resentment, kicked V1 from behind and then delivered a forceful punch to his face. The blow caused V1 to fall backwards, hitting his head on the concrete and losing consciousness.
Although Razali initially stayed with the victim and escorted him to the bus stop once he regained consciousness, he left shortly after. Moments later, V1 collapsed again. A passing motorcyclist discovered him unconscious and alerted emergency services.
Hospitalization And Long Recovery
V1 was rushed to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a traumatic brain injury. He was granted 65 days of hospitalization leave and required ongoing rehabilitation involving both speech and physical therapy.
The incident left lasting effects on the victim’s health and well-being, highlighting the severe consequences of seemingly minor workplace conflicts escalating unchecked.
Sentencing And Compensation
On July 22, 2025, Razali pleaded guilty to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt. He was sentenced to seven months in jail and ordered to pay compensation amounting to nearly S$18,600 (approximately IDR 232 million) to the victim. Should he fail to pay, Razali faces an additional 18 days in jail.

The court also set his bail at S$10,000, and Razali is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on August 5.
Legal And Workplace Ramifications
This case underscores the importance of de-escalation in workplace disputes and the legal consequences of retaliatory violence. Employers and security agencies may revisit protocols to manage interpersonal conflicts and ensure safety standards are upheld.
The swift legal action also reaffirms Singapore’s strong stance on violent conduct, even among colleagues, setting a precedent for zero tolerance of such acts.
The Lucky Plaza assault serves as a stark reminder of the long-term impact of workplace violence. As Singapore continues to enforce strict legal accountability, the case resonates with neighboring countries like Indonesia, where many citizens work in similar roles. It stresses the importance of conflict resolution and emotional regulation, particularly in high-stress jobs involving public safety.
