No injuries reported after tank grazes traffic light near Parliament House due to technical issue
A Leopard 2SG Main Battle Tank unexpectedly collided with a traffic light during Singapore’s National Day Parade 2025 education show, prompting swift response from authorities and sparking widespread online discussion.
Tank Grazes Traffic Light Near Parliament House
On Saturday, July 5, at approximately 7:20pm, a Leopard 2SG Main Battle Tank (L2SG) was involved in a minor accident during the National Day Parade 2025 National Education (NE) Show 2. The tank, participating in the Mobile Column segment, experienced a technical fault while turning along North Bridge Road, near Parliament House and the Supreme Court.

Footage shared by the SGRV Facebook page captured the tank bumping into a traffic light as it attempted a right turn. The traffic light was left slightly askew, but no damage to the tank or injuries to personnel were reported.
MINDEF: Standard Procedures Followe
In response to media queries, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) confirmed the tank was moving within the 20km/h speed limit and had remained inside the cordoned-off parade zone. The crew reacted in accordance with standard operating procedures, safely recovering the tank without incident.
A MINDEF spokesperson said investigations are ongoing and that minor damage to the traffic light has already been repaired in coordination with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the NDP 2025 Executive Committee.
Public Reaction: Support, Not Shame
Despite the accident, public response was largely empathetic, with many social media users defending the tank crew. Several commenters emphasized the importance of rehearsals and noted that such minor mishaps are opportunities for improvement.
Facebook user Chen WL reminded others that the crew likely consisted of NSFs (full-time national servicemen) and urged the public to be understanding. Another user, Low Beng Keat, added that rehearsals exist precisely to handle and learn from such incidents.
Technical Speculation: Steering or Mechanical Fault
Tank enthusiasts and former technicians speculated that a steering linkage failure or mechanical pivoting issue may have caused the mishap. One user noted that the tank appeared to struggle with stationary pivoting—a typically simple maneuver for such vehicles.
While no official cause has been released, multiple commenters pointed out that such mechanical issues are not uncommon with heavy armored vehicles, especially under parade conditions that include tight turns and slow movement.
Incident Highlights Importance of Parade Safety
The NDP, set to celebrate Singapore’s 60th year of independence on August 9 at the Padang, often includes Mobile Column segments showcasing military assets. The tank incident, while minor, underscores the challenges of operating large vehicles in urban environments and the critical role of safety measures in public displays.
The July 5 tank incident, though minor, brings attention to the precision and pressure behind Singapore’s national celebrations. For Indonesians and Singaporeans alike, it reflects both the scale of such parades and the professionalism expected of military personnel. It also reminds the public to approach such moments with understanding rather than criticism, especially when safety protocols are followed and no harm is done.
