One dead, three arrested after armed robbery attempt turns deadly in Gelang Patah

A robbery attempt at a Johor petrol station ended in bloodshed when a man with gunshot wounds was dumped outside a hospital hours after the attack. Police investigations are underway, with suspects already in custody.

Robbery Turns Deadly At Gelang Patah

A violent robbery attempt in the early hours of July 3 at a Shell petrol station near the Second Link Expressway in Gelang Patah, Johor, escalated into a deadly shootout. Around 12:10am, four masked men armed with machetes ambushed a parked vehicle. However, one of the vehicle’s passengers, reportedly armed, opened fire, forcing the attackers to flee.

CCTV footage that has since gone viral showed the suspects smashing the car windows before being repelled by gunfire. While three suspects escaped in a getaway vehicle, the fourth fled on foot, according to local media reports.

Body With Gunshot Wounds Dumped At Hospital

At approximately 1:40am, about an hour after the robbery, staff at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru alerted police to a man’s body left outside the emergency entrance. CCTV at the hospital showed two individuals in a dark vehicle dropping off the victim before speeding away.

The deceased was identified as a 42-year-old man from Sungai Petani, Kedah, with four previous criminal convictions. An autopsy confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Authorities are investigating whether he was one of the attackers involved in the robbery attempt.

Arrests Made In Kuala Lumpur

By 7:00pm on July 3, Johor police had arrested three male suspects — two Malaysians and one Indian national, aged between 30 and 40 — in Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur. Among the items seized were

  • An upper receiver of a Glock 19 pistol
  • A licensed firearm permit
  • A magazine containing six 9mm bullets
  • Bullet casings
  • A black Honda Accord, believed to be used in the incident

One of the suspects is a licensed personal bodyguard, but police are now investigating whether the firearm was used lawfully during the incident.

Legal Charges And Investigations

Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar confirmed that the suspects are being held under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and are being investigated under

  • Section 302 of the Penal Code (Murder)
  • Section 148 (Rioting with weapons)
  • Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 (Firearm misuse)

Kumar emphasized that investigations are ongoing, especially to determine the deceased’s role in the robbery and to identify any remaining accomplices.

Public Caution And Reassurance

Datuk Kumar urged the public to avoid speculation and refrain from spreading misinformation. He assured that this was an isolated case, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety in Johor.

Authorities have requested anyone with information to contact the Johor police hotline at 019-2792095 or the operations room at 07-2212999.

This deadly petrol station robbery underscores rising concerns about organized violent crime involving firearms in the region. For Indonesians frequently crossing via the Second Link or visiting Johor, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of law enforcement vigilance and public cooperation in ensuring safety across the border.
