More Batam men embrace vasectomy as demand for male contraceptive services steadily grows
A significant shift in family planning dynamics is unfolding in Batam, where male involvement in contraception has exceeded expectations. In just five months, the city doubled its annual vasectomy target—a promising sign for gender-inclusive reproductive health efforts.
Vasectomy Uptake Doubles in Record Time
In an encouraging development for reproductive health advocacy, Batam’s 2025 vasectomy program has already doubled its annual target by May. According to Novi Harmadyastuti, Head of Batam’s Office for Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control, and Family Planning (DP3AP2KB), 20 men underwent vasectomy procedures—surpassing the year’s original goal of 10.
“This is extraordinary,” Novi said on Saturday, June 14. “Last year, we only met the target of 12 participants by December. Now, we’ve already doubled this year’s goal in just five months.”
Free KB Campaign Behind the Success
The milestone reflects the success of Batam’s ongoing free family planning (KB) campaign, launched in February 2025 in collaboration with the Provincial BKKBN of the Riau Islands. This initiative strategically targets all 12 districts in Batam, tailoring service delivery to population density.
Densely populated areas like Sagulung and Batu Aji received more service days, ensuring broader and equitable access. “We organize everything efficiently so that every community is reached,” Novi explained.
Significant Progress in Other Contraceptive Services
Beyond vasectomies, Batam has made strong progress in other contraceptive services as of May 2025:
- Implants: 717 participants from a 1,000-target
- IUD (Intrauterine Device): 300 participants from a 1,000-target
- Tubectomy (Female Sterilization): 33 participants from a 99-target
- Vasectomy (Male Sterilization): 20 participants from a 10-target
These figures demonstrate the growing public engagement with various family planning methods, reflecting successful outreach and education efforts.

Coordinated Efforts Sustain Growth
DP3AP2KB continues to coordinate closely with BKKBN Kepri, posyandu (community health posts), and local healthcare facilities to maintain momentum. The agency prioritizes not only achieving numerical targets but also improving service quality and access.
“What we care about is not just numbers,” said Novi. “We want to ensure every family in Batam can access high-quality services and plan for a better future.”
A Model for Inclusive Family Planning
The proactive male participation in Batam’s vasectomy program challenges long-held gender norms in family planning, offering a model for similar urban areas across Indonesia. The city’s approach—combining accessibility, consistent service delivery, and grassroots coordination—signals a progressive shift toward shared reproductive responsibility.
Batam’s success in exceeding its vasectomy target within just five months reflects a broader cultural and operational shift in family planning. With strong local governance, inclusive outreach, and community-driven healthcare, Batam sets a powerful precedent for expanding reproductive health services across Indonesia—and serves as an insightful reference point for regional family planning advocates in Singapore.
