Singapore authorities target dangerous cyclists, PMD riders, and illegal e-vaporisers in city sweep
A coordinated enforcement operation in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) on June 6 resulted in one arrest and the seizure of eight bicycles and PMDs, as authorities crack down on reckless riding and illegal devices.
Joint Enforcement Blitz in Singapore’s CBD
A joint effort by the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Land Transport Authority (LTA), and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) targeted errant cyclists and personal mobility device (PMD) users in a high-traffic urban zone. Conducted on June 6, the operation aimed to reinforce road and public path safety while tackling five key offences, including illegal PMD usage and possession of banned e-vaporisers.
Five Major Offences Under the Radar
According to a statement issued on June 11, the operation focused on:
- Use of non-compliant PMDs
- Speeding on public paths
- Illegal road usage by PMDs
- Dangerous or reckless riding
- Possession of illegal e-vaporisers
Authorities detected 16 offences, highlighting persistent issues among users despite Singapore’s strict mobility and vaping regulations.
Seizures and Arrests
One individual was arrested in connection with a rash act causing hurt, with the PMD involved subsequently seized. Police also confiscated:
- 5 bicycles without functioning handbrakes
- 1 non-compliant PMD ridden on a public road
- 1 unregistered vehicle
- 8 illegal e-vaporisers
These figures underscore the variety of safety violations that continue to pose threats to pedestrians and commuters in the city centre.
Authorities Stress Ongoing Vigilance
The SPF, LTA, and HSA affirmed their commitment to regular and surprise checks. “Such offences endanger public safety and contravene the law,” the agencies said. They also reminded the public that owning or using e-vaporisers is illegal in Singapore, with enforcement under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act.
Call for Responsible Riding
Authorities have urged all cyclists and PMD users to comply with existing regulations, including proper equipment maintenance and adhering to designated paths. Reckless riding not only endangers lives but also undermines efforts to keep public spaces safe and orderly.
This operation in Singapore’s CBD reflects broader regional efforts to tackle unsafe mobility and illegal tech use in public areas. For neighbouring countries like Indonesia where PMD use is also rising, Singapore’s firm stance serves as a model for balancing innovation with accountability in urban transportation.
