On the morning of 10 June 2025, an 85-year-old woman lost her life after being hit by a ComfortDelGro taxi along Lorong 1 Geylang, towards Upper Boon Keng Road, near Kallang MRT station. The police were alerted to the incident at 10:35am, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) quickly responded.

Eyewitnesses said the woman had just finished breakfast at a nearby coffee shop. Shortly after she began crossing the road, she was struck by the cab. Bloodstains and a small pool of blood were later seen in front of the taxi, close to a pedestrian crossing.

Ms Wu Xiufen, 51, a stallholder at the coffee shop where the woman had eaten, identified her as a regular customer. The elderly woman, dressed in a pink floral top and brown pants, had been reminded to cross carefully before leaving the shop. Moments later, Ms Wu found her lying unconscious in the middle of the road, bleeding from her head and face.

Two young passersby shaded her with an umbrella until SCDF paramedics arrived. Despite attempts to resuscitate her using CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the woman was pronounced dead later at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Nervous Driver Arrested at the Scene

The 68-year-old taxi driver exited the vehicle immediately and appeared visibly shaken. According to Ms Wu, he said, “I’m going to be in trouble if anything happens to her.” He cooperated with police at the scene as officers inspected the vehicle and its trunk.

The Singapore Police Force confirmed the driver’s arrest for careless driving causing death, a serious offence under Singapore law. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the crash.

ComfortDelGro Responds

In response to media queries, ComfortDelGro expressed its deep condolences to the family of the deceased. A company spokesperson stated: “We are profoundly saddened by this accident… and will provide all necessary assistance.”

The transport operator also confirmed it is fully cooperating with ongoing police investigations.

Traffic Measures and Public Reaction

The accident has reignited public discussions around pedestrian safety—especially for the elderly—in high-traffic zones like Kallang. Temporary traffic cones were placed to divert vehicles from the scene, while residents questioned whether more preventive infrastructure is needed near pedestrian crossings.

The victim’s sudden death has left a visible impact on her local community, where she was a familiar face at the morning coffee shop circuit.

This tragic incident highlights the vulnerability of elderly pedestrians in busy urban areas like Singapore’s Kallang district. It underscores the need for both stricter driver vigilance and better infrastructure protections, especially near public transit nodes. As Singapore and neighboring countries like Indonesia continue to urbanize rapidly, prioritizing pedestrian safety must remain a key focus of urban planning and road enforcement.
