Police continue to investigate the suicide of a PT Epson worker who jumped from Barelang Bridge
A 25-year-old factory worker at PT Epson Batam, Muhammad Farhan, was found dead after reportedly jumping from Barelang Bridge I on Friday, June 6, 2025. As authorities search for his missing phone, the motive behind his tragic death remains unclear.
Missing Phone Could Hold Answers
The case gained widespread attention after Farhan’s motorbike was found abandoned on the iconic Barelang Bridge, alongside his employee ID. However, his mobile phone was missing, prompting police to suspect he may have thrown it away before taking his own life.
Iptu Anwar Aris, Chief of Criminal Investigation at Sagulung Police, stated the phone is critical in uncovering Farhan’s motive. “It may contain messages or clues about what he was going through,” Aris explained.
Final Message Raised Alarm
Before the incident, Farhan reportedly sent a short message to a friend, asking them to retrieve his motorbike from the bridge. Alarmed, the friend contacted Farhan’s girlfriend and family, who rushed to the scene—but it was too late.
Farhan, a production line worker at a well-known electronics manufacturer in Muka Kuning, was later found deceased near Pulau Setokok, beneath the bridge. His body was discovered around 10:00 AM, and the discovery triggered emotional scenes, with family members breaking down at the site.

Police Rule Out Foul Play
Initial forensic examinations found no signs of violence. The current working theory, according to police, is suicide—although they remain cautious in drawing final conclusions without locating Farhan’s mobile phone.
Bridge Safety Under Scrutiny Again
Farhan’s death is the latest in a series of suicides at Barelang Bridge, a popular landmark that has tragically become known for such incidents. Local authorities and mental health advocates are now calling for increased security and mental health awareness programs.
Kapolsek Sagulung, Iptu Rohandi Tambunan, urged the public not to face life’s burdens alone. “Every problem has a solution. If you’re struggling, seek help—talk to someone.”

The tragic death of Muhammad Farhan has reignited discussions in Batam and Singapore about mental health, worker pressures, and the need for stronger preventive infrastructure on public landmarks. As investigations continue, Farhan’s story stands as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of emotional support and early intervention.
