A domestic argument led a man to drive recklessly against traffic in Johor Bahru
A heated dispute between a man and his wife took a dangerous turn on the roads of Johor Bahru, when the man drove his SUV against traffic flow, an incident that was captured on video and quickly went viral.
Viral Video Sparks Police Investigation
On June 8, 2025, Johor Bahru South Police received a tip-off from Bukit Aman Police Headquarters about a viral video showing a blue Perodua Aruz SUV dangerously moving against traffic along Jalan Skudai – Pantai Lido. The footage quickly circulated on social media, raising public concern over road safety.
Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, the Johor Bahru South District Police Chief, confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 1:41am on Saturday, June 7. Following a registration plate check, officers identified the vehicle owner and instructed him to report to the local traffic police station.
Driver Blames Marital Argument
That same day, at around 11:30pm, the 34-year-old male driver appeared at the station. During questioning, he admitted to driving against traffic due to a “misunderstanding” with his wife, which he claimed distracted him and caused him to enter the wrong lane.
ACP Raub stated that the man tested negative for alcohol and drugs, ruling out intoxication as a contributing factor. The case is now under investigation under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to reckless and dangerous driving.
No Injuries Reported, But Safety in Question
Fortunately, no accidents or injuries were reported during the incident. However, the act of driving against traffic, especially at high speeds on public roads, poses severe risks to motorists and pedestrians alike. Authorities have emphasized that emotional distress cannot justify endangering public safety.
Section 42(1) carries strict penalties in Malaysia, including fines, imprisonment, and disqualification from holding a driving license, depending on the severity of the offense and any resulting harm.
Social Media and Public Reaction
The viral video sparked widespread criticism online, with many netizens expressing concern over rising road incidents linked to emotional outbursts. Police have reiterated the importance of responsible driving and urged motorists to seek help during emotional crises rather than resorting to impulsive behavior.
Authorities also reminded the public that modern dashboard and surveillance cameras aid investigations, making it easier for law enforcement to act swiftly when such violations occur.
A Wake-Up Call for Emotional Management
This case highlights the pressing need for greater awareness around emotional regulation, especially when behind the wheel. The consequences of such reckless actions could easily escalate into fatal tragedies. Law enforcement continues to monitor road behavior and encourages drivers to remain calm and focused.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale for drivers across Malaysia, Indonesia, and beyond—emotional disputes should never spill over onto public roads. As social media amplifies such cases, public accountability and legal consequences are likely to follow. Ultimately, emotional awareness and road safety must go hand in hand.
