Altercation outside Sengkang school after U-14 match leads to arrest and police investigation

A violent altercation erupted following a Singapore Youth League (SYL) match on May 11, resulting in a parent being injured by a foldable chair and a 46-year-old man arrested for a rash act causing hurt.

The incident occurred just after an Under-14 match between Geylang International and Albirex Singapore Football Academy at Sengkang Secondary School, where Geylang won 8-0. Following the game, Daniel Tay, father of an Albirex player, intervened when a fellow parent complained of being insulted by Geylang players. Though tensions rose, no physical contact occurred until moments later when Tay was allegedly struck in the face by a metal foldable chair as he exited the venue.

Victim Hospitalised, Suspect Arrested

Tay sustained injuries to his left eye and cheekbone and was treated at Sengkang General Hospital. He has since been discharged, though bruising and swelling remain. Police confirmed that they received a report around 7:15 PM at 10 Compassvale Lane and arrested a 46-year-old man for a rash act causing hurt. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full context of the incident.

Clubs Respond to Disturbing Incident

Both Albirex and Geylang International released statements on May 12. Albirex strongly condemned all acts of aggression and expressed support for Tay, stating their commitment to safety for all stakeholders. Geylang, meanwhile, said it is conducting an internal review and urged the public to refrain from speculation. The club acknowledged tensions during the match and confirmed both sets of players engaged in verbal mocking.

SYL Officials Issue Warning

The Singapore Youth League, part of the national “Unleash The Roar!” football initiative, denounced the violence and pledged disciplinary action against involved parties. “We remind players and supporters to respect league rules and abstain from unruly behaviour,” it stated. The league, which features over 300 youth teams from across Singapore, has highlighted the need for sportsmanship on and off the pitch.

Wider Concerns About Matchday Conduct

Tay, while advocating for accountability, voiced opposition to banning parents from attending games. “Parents are the backbone of the SYL,” he said, warning that while this wasn’t an isolated incident, banning all spectators would punish many for the actions of a few. He called for measured discipline and better sideline behaviour from adults involved in youth sports.

According to Singapore’s Penal Code, individuals found guilty of causing hurt by a rash act may face up to one year in jail and/or a fine of S$5,000. As police continue investigations, the case has sparked wider discussion about the responsibilities of parents at youth sporting events and the importance of ensuring safety in junior sports environments.

The altercation at the SYL match underscores the importance of maintaining composure and mutual respect in youth sports. While competitive spirit is encouraged on the field, violence and aggression in the stands threaten the integrity of grassroots football and the safety of its participants. Stronger accountability, education, and sportsmanship are critical to safeguarding future games and building a positive environment for young athletes.
