United’s winless run reaches five matches after defeat and Leny Yoro’s red card.

Manchester United’s difficult run continued in Madrid as an early defensive lapse, a second-half dismissal, and another defeat increased scrutiny on Michael Carrick.

Atlético Strike After 50 Seconds
Atlético Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 on October 13, with Pablo Barrios scoring inside the first minute at the Metropolitano Stadium. United responded to the early setback and created chances to equalize, but Atlético also threatened repeatedly. Johnny Cardoso had a goal disallowed after a VAR review identified a handball by Marcos Llorente in the buildup, while the hosts struck the woodwork twice.

Fernandes Comes Close to Equalizer
United improved after the break and nearly leveled when Bruno Fernandes struck the crossbar. The opportunity came during a more competitive second-half spell for Carrick’s side, but United were unable to convert their pressure into a goal before the match shifted decisively against them.

Yoro Sent Off
Manchester United were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute when Leny Yoro was sent off after a VAR review for bringing down Jonathan David while defending as the last man. The decision left United chasing the game with a numerical disadvantage and made their attempt to recover from the early deficit significantly more difficult.

Lookman Seals Atlético Victory
Substitute Ademola Lookman scored Atlético’s second goal in the 79th minute, effectively ending United’s hopes of a comeback. The defeat extended Manchester United’s winless run to five matches, adding to frustration following their recent 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

Pressure Builds on Carrick
The result intensified scrutiny of Michael Carrick ahead of Manchester United’s next Premier League match against Leeds United. United had collected just six points from their opening six league matches, their lowest total at that stage since the 1986–87 season. The Irish Times reported growing questions about Carrick’s future as the team’s poor run continued across domestic and European competitions.

For Indonesian and Singaporean Manchester United supporters, the defeat adds another setback to an already difficult early-season run. United showed periods of improvement in Madrid, but the early goal, Yoro’s dismissal, and failure to convert chances left Carrick facing even greater pressure ahead of the club’s next fixtures.
