The Bishop of Rome passes peacefully in Vatican residence; funeral arrangements underway

Pope Francis passed away peacefully on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His death, confirmed at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, has brought a wave of mourning across the Catholic world and beyond.

The news was delivered by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, who officially declared the Pope’s passing at 9:45 AM from Casa Santa Marta. “The Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” he announced, highlighting the Pope’s life of service rooted in Gospel values, especially his tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized.

A Final Easter Message for Peace

His final public appearance came just one day earlier, on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. During his traditional Urbi et Orbi address, Pope Francis spoke from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square. In what would become his last message to the world, he called for an end to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging all parties involved to “cease hostilities and pursue peace with courage and sincerity.” The address, marked by a frail but resolute voice, reflected his enduring commitment to justice and global reconciliation.

According to the Holy See Press Office, the Pope will be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica for public viewing as early as Wednesday morning. His funeral, set to be simpler in nature, is expected to take place at St. Peter’s Square within four to six days of his passing. Photo: Getty Images (2025)

Shortly after the announcement, preparations began for the faithful to bid farewell. According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, Pope Francis’ body may be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23, where the public will be able to pay their respects. The exact arrangements will be decided following the General Congregation of Cardinals on Tuesday.

Ceremonial Protocols Begin

On Monday evening, the rite of certification of death was carried out in the ground-floor chapel of Casa Santa Marta. Cardinal Farrell presided over the ceremony, which included the official reading and validation of the death declaration. Vatican officials sealed both the Pope’s apartment in the Apostolic Palace and his living quarters, in line with papal tradition.

Pope Francis’ health had been fragile for years. Hospitalized on February 14, 2025, with bronchitis, his condition worsened and was diagnosed as bilateral pneumonia. Although he returned to the Vatican after 38 days, he never fully recovered. His respiratory issues dated back to a major lung operation in Argentina in 1957 and frequently interrupted his public duties.

Final Wishes for Simplicity

In a significant move reflecting his humility, Pope Francis approved a revised liturgical book for papal funerals in April 2024. The new Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis emphasizes the Pope’s role as a servant of Christ, focusing on the resurrection and avoiding excessive grandeur. Archbishop Diego Ravelli noted that Francis requested a funeral that expressed faith, not power.

By Monday night, close aides and Vatican officials had begun paying their respects. As global leaders prepare tributes, the Holy See continues to coordinate ceremonies and arrangements for the coming days. The mourning period is expected to draw millions in prayer, reflection, and remembrance of the pontiff’s transformative leadership.

A Legacy of Mercy, Reform, and Inclusion

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was the first Jesuit and first Latin American to hold the papacy. He will be remembered for his bold, compassionate, and reform-minded leadership. His legacy includes:

  • Reforming the Curia: Streamlining Vatican administration for better transparency and accountability.
  • Championing the Poor: Placing social justice and advocacy for the marginalized at the heart of Church mission.
  • Environmental Leadership: Authoring Laudato Si’, the first encyclical focused entirely on ecological concerns and climate responsibility.
  • Interfaith Outreach: Deepening relationships with other religions and promoting peace through dialogue.
  • Synodality and Inclusion: Encouraging broader participation in Church decision-making and pastoral care for LGBTQ+ Catholics and divorced individuals. While he has not changed Church doctrine—which still defines marriage as between a man and a woman and considers same-sex sexual acts as sinful—he consistently championed compassion, inclusion, and non-discrimination.

The passing of Pope Francis closes a transformative chapter in the modern Catholic Church. His moral courage, emphasis on humility, and dedication to the vulnerable reshaped the papacy for a new generation. As the Church prepares for his funeral, the world reflects on a life marked by justice, mercy, and unwavering faith.
