A Saturday night clash in Batam escalated into violence, injuring residents and alarming locals

A violent altercation erupted at the Simpang Empat Bengkong intersection in Batam on the night of March 29, 2025. A group of men, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, physically assaulted passers-by, resulting in injuries and public fear. While the situation has since been resolved through mediation, residents continue to express concern over safety and delayed police response.

The incident began when a man identified as Yance was brushed by a motorcyclist near Bengkong Mahkota. Enraged, he returned to the area with four friends—some armed—and assaulted multiple road users. The commotion disrupted traffic and led to a full shutdown of the intersection, drawing attention from residents and authorities alike.

Residents Attacked Amid Panic

Eyewitnesses reported that one of the men began randomly attacking motorcyclists, even pursuing those who attempted to flee. A local resident, known as Pak Dani, was beaten while trying to stop the violence. “He only tried to help a scared teenager but ended up being the target himself,” a witness said, recalling how Dani was chased and assaulted despite seeking shelter.

The incident stemmed from a minor collision between a teenage motorcyclist and Yance, who was returning home after buying food. The teen, who became frightened after being scolded, tried to flee, which escalated Yance’s anger. While the teen was not seriously injured, the outburst that followed involved verbal threats and physical assaults on innocent passers-by, highlighting how unchecked emotions can trigger community-wide panic.

Locals criticized the police for arriving only after the crowd had dispersed. “They came when it was already safe,” said Rina, a warung owner. Many residents had called for help during the brawl but received no immediate response. Some reportedly shouted at the police out of frustration, believing their delayed action was futile.

Police eventually detained the five individuals involved, including Yance. The case was settled through restorative justice after victims and suspects agreed to reconciliation. All parties signed a formal letter of forgiveness. “They’ve admitted their wrongs and made peace,” said Iptu Marihot Pakpahan, Bengkong Police Criminal Unit Head.

Authorities Urge Calm

While the case did not proceed to court, the authorities urged the public to remain calm and report any suspicious behavior immediately. “Let’s preserve peace and avoid being provoked,” Pakpahan added. Residents, however, still hope for more proactive policing in densely populated areas like Bengkong to prevent future unrest.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over law enforcement responsiveness and community safety in Batam. With growing nightlife and high-density neighborhoods, consistent patrols and faster action from authorities are essential to ensure public trust and security.
