New RoRo Route Expected to Boost Trade, Tourism, and Investment Between Indonesia and Malaysia

The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Johor Bahru is actively promoting the establishment of a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ferry route between Batam and Johor. This initiative aims to enhance cross-border connectivity, facilitating trade, tourism, and investment while offering an efficient transport alternative for businesses and residents.

The RoRo route is part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral ties between Indonesia and Malaysia by improving mobility, reducing logistics costs, and fostering economic growth in both regions. The Special Border Treatment program is also being explored to streamline border crossing procedures.

The push for the Batam-Johor RoRo route was highlighted during the pre-launch event of the Tanjung Belungkor Ferry Terminal in Johor on February 6, 2024. The event was attended by Indonesian Consul General Sigit S. Widiyanto, Batam’s Deputy Mayor, and representatives from BP Batam.

Johor state officials, including Y.B. Raven Kumar and Y.B. Mohd Hairi, expressed their full support for the project, emphasizing its potential to strengthen economic ties between Johor and Batam.

Strategic Benefits of the RoRo Route

The RoRo service is expected to significantly boost regional trade by reducing logistics costs and enhancing supply chain efficiency. Currently, goods transported between Batam and Johor rely on conventional shipping and air freight, which can be costly and time-consuming. The introduction of the RoRo service would provide a more economical and time-efficient transport solution, benefiting businesses on both sides.

For tourism, the RoRo ferry will allow travelers to bring their own vehicles from Johor to Batam, increasing visitor convenience and mobility. This is expected to attract more Malaysian tourists to Batam and vice versa, boosting hospitality and retail sectors in both regions.

Beyond trade and tourism, the Indonesian Consulate is also working on a Special Border Treatment program to simplify cross-border movement for Indonesian and Malaysian citizens. The initiative aims to ease customs procedures and visa requirements, particularly for workers, tourists, and businesses that rely on seamless travel.

“This is part of a broader effort to enhance regional cooperation and ensure that Batam and Johor continue to be key economic partners,” said Batam’s Deputy Mayor, emphasizing the importance of border efficiency for sustaining growth.

While the project has received strong political backing, logistical and regulatory challenges remain. Port infrastructure improvements, customs harmonization, and vessel operation investments are necessary to ensure the RoRo route becomes fully operational.

Despite these challenges, both Indonesia and Malaysia remain optimistic. Officials emphasized that the RoRo project will be a key driver of economic growth, further strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

The proposed RoRo route between Batam and Johor represents a major step toward improving connectivity and economic cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia. The success of this initiative will depend on continued diplomatic efforts, regulatory coordination, and infrastructure readiness to ensure its smooth implementation.
