Two Officers Dismissed, Others Demoted Following Internal Investigation
The Riau Islands Regional Police (Polda Kepri) has dismissed two officers and demoted seven others after they were found guilty of extorting a drug suspect. The scandal, which involved demanding a Rp20 million (SGD 1,660) bribe, has sparked public outrage and intensified concerns about police integrity in Indonesia.
The case highlights deep-rooted issues within law enforcement, where abuse of power continues to undermine public trust. The Riau Islands Police Department has vowed to take strict action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Scandal Unfolds: How Officers Exploited a Drug Suspect
The extortion incident occurred in December 2024, when nine officers from the Narcotics Directorate of Polda Kepri detained a drug user. Among them, Commissioner CP allegedly demanded a Rp20 million (SGD 1,660) bribe in exchange for the suspect’s release.
When the suspect could not afford the payment, CP reportedly confiscated his ID card and forced him to apply for an online loan. Once the loan was approved, the money was handed over to the officer, and the suspect was set free. This shocking abuse of power was later reported by the victim, leading to an internal investigation.

Following an ethics hearing on March 7, 2025, the Kepri Police Ethics Commission found sufficient evidence to hold the nine officers accountable. The trial, led by Commissioner Tri Yulianto, resulted in two officers being dismissed dishonorably, while seven others faced demotions.
“This case is a serious violation of our ethical standards. Police officers must protect the public, not exploit them,” said Kepri Police Spokesperson Zahwani Pandra Arsyad. He emphasized that the department remains committed to eliminating corrupt practices within its ranks.
A Pattern of Police Misconduct in Batam
This case is not an isolated incident. Just months earlier, ten other officers from Barelang Police were dismissed for embezzling 1 kg of methamphetamine from a drug trafficking syndicate. The repeated abuse of power by law enforcement in the region raises serious concerns about internal accountability.
Legal experts argue that unless stronger reforms are introduced, such cases will continue to erode public trust in law enforcement institutions. The recent wave of dismissals reflects an attempt to clean up the force, but critics question whether these efforts go far enough.
The scandal has sparked outrage among Indonesians, with calls for stricter oversight and harsher penalties for corrupt officers. Many have taken to social media to express their frustration, urging the government to increase transparency in police investigations.
Despite the Kepri Police Department’s swift response, activists argue that systemic corruption remains unchecked. Without comprehensive reforms, cases like this will continue to tarnish the credibility of law enforcement in Indonesia.
The firing of corrupt officers in Kepri marks a small step toward police accountability, but the larger issue of institutional corruption remains. While authorities have promised tougher disciplinary actions, critics warn that without systemic change, similar abuses of power will persist, further damaging public trust in law enforcement.
