26 Additional E-Gates at CIQ Complex to Ease Congestion by February 19

Commuters crossing the Johor-Singapore border can expect faster immigration clearance as 26 new electronic gates (e-gates) are set to become operational at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex by February 19, 2025. This upgrade aims to reduce congestion and improve travel efficiency at one of the world’s busiest land border crossings. The Johor Works, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee has confirmed that the new e-gates are currently undergoing testing and will be ready for public use soon. With this expansion, BSI will have 39 e-gates in the arrival hall and 29 in the departure hall, enhancing automated clearance for thousands of daily travelers.

26 New E-Gates to Be Fully Operational by February 19

Malaysia Enhances Border Infrastructure to Address Long Queues The Johor Works, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee confirmed that 26 new e-gates are being installed at BSI CIQ and will be operational by February 19.

  • 17 e-gates will be installed in the arrival hall
  • 9 e-gates will be added to the departure hall

With these upgrades, BSI will now have 39 arrival e-gates and 29 departure e-gates, nearly doubling its automated clearance capacity compared to previous years. Johor State Executive Councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh stated: “This initiative is expected to alleviate congestion and enhance efficiency for daily commuters traveling between Malaysia and Singapore.”

E-Gate Expansion to Benefit Thousands of Daily Travelers

Malaysia’s e-gate system at CIQ checkpoints was first introduced for foreign nationals in January 2023. Initially available only for Malaysian passport holders, the system has since been expanded to foreign travelers from 63 countries, including Singaporeans.

With this latest enhancement, the e-gate facility will now be extended to 27 more nationalities, ensuring:

  • Faster clearance for daily Singaporean commuters
  • Reduced congestion at peak travel hours
  • Greater convenience for tourists and business travelers

A regular commuter, Tan Wei Kiat, a Singaporean working in Johor, expressed relief at the new upgrade:

“Crossing the border daily can be a frustrating experience due to long queues. More e-gates mean less waiting time and smoother travel.”

The Malaysia-Singapore border remains a critical transit point, handling over 300,000 crossings per day. While the new e-gates are expected to reduce delays, concerns about holiday and weekend peak-hour congestion persist. Authorities are considering additional measures, such as: – Extending e-gate access to more foreign travelers – Enhancing automated processing for vehicles – Deploying additional immigration officers during peak hours Speaking about future improvements, Mohamad Fazli added: “We remain committed to enhancing border infrastructure to ensure a smoother, more efficient immigration process for all travelers.”

The e-gate expansion is part of Malaysia’s long-term strategy to modernize border security and streamline travel. Future initiatives may include: – AI-driven immigration processing to detect anomalies in real-time – Improved facial recognition systems to enhance security – Smart queue management technologies to optimize traveler flow Malaysia’s Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail previously announced that the government is exploring more high-tech solutions to ensure border security while reducing congestion.

The addition of 26 new e-gates at BSI CIQ is a significant step forward in reducing border congestion and improving travel efficiency between Malaysia and Singapore. For Singaporeans commuting daily to Johor for work or leisure, the new e-gates will cut waiting times and provide a smoother immigration experience. For tourists and international visitors, the upgrade ensures faster clearance, enhancing Malaysia’s appeal as a travel destination. As Malaysia continues to modernize its immigration processes, these efforts align with global trends in automated border control, ensuring security while facilitating seamless travel.
