Law Enforcement Agencies Unite in Batam’s Fight Against Drug Trafficking
In a significant step towards combating drug smuggling, the Batam Customs Office (Bea Cukai Batam) held a high-profile press conference on 5 February 2025, revealing the success of its latest narcotics enforcement efforts. The event, attended by law enforcement officials, military representatives, and prosecutors, showcased seized narcotics and smuggling evidence, underscoring the collaborative fight against international drug syndicates operating in the Riau Islands.
The press conference, held on the third floor of the Batam Customs Headquarters, featured representatives from the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU), the Police Narcotics Division (Polda Kepri), and Immigration authorities, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling cross-border drug crimes.
Officials emphasized that Batam remains a critical transit hub for narcotics smuggling due to its proximity to Malaysia and Singapore, making increased surveillance and border security measures essential in preventing illegal drug trade.
At the Batam Customs Headquarters, officials from Customs, Police, Military, and Immigration gathered to discuss recent narcotics seizures and ongoing efforts to dismantle smuggling syndicates.
Details of the Seized Narcotics and Smuggling Evidence
Authorities displayed 2kg of confiscated narcotics, recovered from two suitcases, a black backpack, and several mobile phones, all linked to drug trafficking operations. The seized drugs are believed to have been destined for regional distribution.

Strengthening Indonesia’s Asta Cita Program Against Narcotics
During the press conference, Batam Customs Chief Zaky Firmansyah reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to President Joko Widodo’s Asta Cita Program, which prioritizes narcotics eradication as part of the nation’s security agenda. Officials stressed the devastating impact of drug abuse, citing its effects on public health, economic stability, and national security.
Batam’s strategic location near Malaysia and Singapore makes it a prime target for drug syndicates, seeking to move illicit substances across borders. Authorities are strengthening port inspections, cargo screening, and intelligence-sharing to counteract smuggling networks.
Officials urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. Increased collaboration with international agencies and the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies are planned to enhance border security and prevent future drug smuggling attempts.
Batam’s narcotics enforcement efforts ensure a safer regional environment. Stricter customs checks may lead to increased security screenings for travelers, but they reinforce Southeast Asia’s commitment to tackling drug-related crimes. As Batam continues its economic growth, enhanced security measures will help protect businesses, residents, and visitors from the dangers of organized crime.
