Family Targeted Repeatedly Despite Police Reports, Says Wife
A Singaporean man was left with head and body injuries after defending his family from attackers during a visit to his wife’s hometown in Kluang, Johor, to celebrate Chinese New Year. The incident, which escalated over several days, resulted in the arrest of one suspect, with authorities searching for two more accomplices.
Attacks Escalate During Festive Season in Kluang
The victim’s wife, Ms Fang, a 42-year-old hairstylist, reported that her family was harassed for three consecutive days at their home in Kluang, Johor, during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The attackers set off firecrackers, splashed paint, and smashed car windows, forcing the family to defend themselves with sticks.
“We don’t owe money to anyone, and no debt collection notices were left,” said Ms Fang, dismissing suspicions of loan shark involvement.
Victim Suffers Head, Chest, and Limb Injuries
During the confrontation on January 31, Ms Fang’s husband sustained injuries to his head, chest, ankle, and arms. The family managed to subdue and tie up one of the attackers, who later confessed that he had been paid RM200 (S$60) to harass the family.
“If we have a feud with someone, we’re willing to resolve it. But if this is a mistake, we hope they stop harassing us,” said Ms Fang’s mother.

On February 1, Johor police confirmed the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect with a history of criminal and drug-related offences. The arrest occurred around 6:10 AM, shortly after the family reported the attack. The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine, and authorities are currently searching for two other accomplices.
“The suspect is under remand until February 3 to assist with ongoing investigations,” said Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, Kluang District Police Chief.
This was not the first time the family had faced such harassment. Similar incidents occurred in 2023 and 2024, but despite multiple police reports, the family claims they received no substantial follow-up from authorities. They now hope the arrest will lead to a thorough investigation and justice.
For Singaporeans and international visitors traveling to Malaysia, this case highlights the importance of cross-border safety measures and the need for efficient law enforcement responses in handling harassment cases. The incident underscores the vulnerabilities faced by expatriates and families visiting during festive seasons and the critical role of bilateral cooperation in addressing such issues.
