12th Nongsa Neptune Regatta Showcases Maritime Excellence in Riau Islands

The 12th Nongsa Neptune Regatta made a spectacular return in 2025 after a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2024 Indonesian elections. Organised by Nongsa Resorts through Nongsa Point Marina & Resort, the event featured 10 yachts from various countries, including Four Friend, Salty, and Sea Dreamer. This prestigious seven-day maritime event is the world’s only regatta that crosses the equator, offering both a competitive sailing experience and a celebration of nautical traditions.

From Batam to Lingga – A Route Like No Other

Held from January 25 to February 2, 2025, the regatta took participants through the breathtaking waters of the Riau Archipelago, including Nongsa Point Marina, Bintan Island, and Pulau Sikeling in Lingga Regency. The race’s standout feature is its iconic route crossing the equator, making it the only regatta in the world with this distinction.

“This is the only regatta globally that crosses the equator. There’s a special tradition for sailors crossing it for the first time,” said Prakash, Marina Manager at Nongsa Point Marina.

While the regatta is a thrilling competition, it also serves a humanitarian purpose. Participants engaged in charity activities in Desa Batu Berlubang, donating school supplies, books, stationery, and eyeglasses to students and the elderly. This reflects the regatta’s commitment to fostering goodwill alongside maritime excellence.

Challenging Waters and Celebrated Victories

The regatta featured competitive races in both Monohull and Multihull categories. The winners are as follows:

Monohull Category (Overall):

– Prime Factor – 1st Place
– Shardana – 2nd Place
– Liberty 2 – 3rd Place
– Ohana – 4th Place
– Inuka – 5th Place

Multihull Category (Overall):
– Serendipity – 1st Place
– Sabina – 2nd Place

Gerald A. Hendrick, Director of Nongsa Resorts, emphasized the regatta’s role in boosting marine tourism in the Riau Islands and beyond.

“We are the only marina hosting a regatta that spans across multiple regencies and cities,” Hendrick stated, calling for greater support from local and national governments to elevate the event’s global profile.

Meanwhile, Guntur Sakti, Head of the Riau Islands Tourism Office, praised Nongsa Resorts for its consistent efforts in promoting marine tourism through the regatta.

Given Batam’s strategic location near Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia, the regatta enhances regional connectivity through maritime activities. It also offers Singaporean sailing enthusiasts a unique opportunity to participate in an event that blends competitive sailing with cultural exchange.

Moreover, the regatta showcases Indonesia’s rich marine biodiversity and untapped tourism potential, encouraging international tourists to explore Riau’s pristine islands.

The 2025 Nongsa Neptune Regatta was more than just a yacht race—it was a celebration of maritime heritage, international camaraderie, and community engagement. As it continues to grow, the regatta is set to become a cornerstone of Southeast Asia’s sailing calendar, drawing attention to Indonesia’s vibrant maritime culture.
