Traffic accident in Johor sparks seafood frenzy as passers-by grab spilled fish and shrimp

A routine morning commute turned into an unexpected seafood scramble when a lorry carrying fresh fish and shrimp overturned along the Kota Tinggi-Mersing highway near Mawai on January 22, 2025. The accident, involving two cars and the seafood-laden lorry, resulted in a bizarre scene as passers-by rushed to collect the spilled cargo before authorities arrived.

Crash Causes Lorry to Overturn, Scattering Seafood on Road

According to Superintendent Yusof Othman, Kota Tinggi’s District Police Chief, the accident occurred at approximately 9:20 AM. A Naza vehicle rear-ended a Perodua Myvi, causing the Myvi to swerve into the opposite lane and collide with an oncoming seafood delivery lorry. The impact sent the lorry tumbling onto its side, spilling fish and shrimp across the road.

Passers-By Seize the Opportunity for a Free Seafood Feast

Within minutes of the accident, onlookers gathered and began scooping up the fresh seafood strewn across the roadside. Photos and videos of the impromptu seafood grab quickly spread across social media, attracting widespread attention and mixed reactions from netizens. By the time law enforcement officers arrived, the entire cargo had been taken.

No Injuries Reported, But Summonses Issued

Superintendent Yusof confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident. However, all three drivers involved—those of the Naza, Myvi, and lorry—were fined under Rule 10 LN 166/59. Each driver has since filed an official report with the authorities.

While the unusual sight amused many, police officials reminded the public that taking goods from accident scenes is discouraged. Authorities emphasized that interfering with a traffic accident site could pose safety risks and obstruct investigations.

Viral Sensation: Mixed Reactions From Social Media Users

The incident sparked a wave of comments online, with some users joking about the “unexpected seafood market” on the highway, while others criticized the actions of those who took the seafood, calling it “opportunistic”. One user commented, “Only in Malaysia can an accident turn into a seafood buffet.”

This incident serves as a reminder of road safety and the importance of responsible driving. While no injuries were recorded, the event highlighted the unpredictable nature of traffic accidents and the public’s tendency to seize unexpected opportunities.
