Family outing turns tragic as strong waves sweep away five in Johor waters
A beach outing in Kota Tinggi, Johor, ended in tragedy after a 33-year-old woman and her 13-year-old niece drowned while three other family members were rescued from strong waves at Bayu Impian Beach, Bayu Damai. The incident occurred on January 21, 2025, around 5:30 PM, with emergency services swiftly responding to the scene.
A Tragic Afternoon at Bayu Impian Beach
Authorities reported that a group of relatives went for a swim at Bayu Impian Beach at approximately 5:00 PM. While in the water, a 33-year-old woman, identified as Siti Fatimah Jaafar, and four children, aged between 10 and 13, were suddenly caught by strong waves and swept away from shore.
A 60-year-old relative, Jaafar Yusof, attempted to rescue the group but was forced to return to shore due to the rough sea conditions. Emergency responders were immediately alerted, and bystanders at the scene assisted in the rescue efforts.

The Kota Tinggi police and Fire and Rescue Department deployed teams from the Punggai and Bandar Penawar stations to aid in the rescue operation. Using safety vests and ropes, members of the public helped to bring all five victims to shore.
Victims Pronounced Dead at the Scene
Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, Siti Fatimah and her niece, Nur Arisya Hanan Mohd Salleh, were unresponsive and later pronounced dead by medical personnel. The other three victims, identified as Nur Qaisara Farhana Mohd Farid (13), Danial Abu (10), and Nur Alisya Shafiya Jamil (10), were stabilized and transported to Hospital Kota Tinggi for further treatment.
Superintendent Yusof Othman, Kota Tinggi’s District Police Chief, confirmed that the case had been classified as a sudden death report due to drowning. He urged the public to avoid water activities due to rough sea conditions and unpredictable tides that pose a high risk of drowning.
The tragic drowning incident at Kota Tinggi serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by strong currents and unpredictable sea conditions. Authorities in Malaysia and Singapore continue to urge beachgoers to exercise caution, particularly during monsoon seasons when tides can be deadly.
