State authorities prepare for heavy rainfall as final monsoon wave approaches

Johor is set to receive 14 mobile water pumps in mid-February 2025 to bolster its flood mitigation efforts as the final wave of the monsoon season approaches. The Johor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) confirmed that these pumps, supplied by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), would be strategically deployed across flood-prone areas to minimize damage. Officials have also warned of severe weather conditions expected between late February and early March.

The arrival of 14 mobile pumps in mid-February is perfectly timed to mitigate potential flooding, according to DID director Azren Khalil.

Johor currently has 49 mobile water pumps, with some in use and others stored for rapid emergency deployment. The new pumps will enhance existing flood control measures, particularly in rural areas and locations with tidal control gates such as Pontian, Batu Pahat, and Mersing. “All unused pumps are stored on department lorries for rapid mobilization, with setup taking approximately three hours,” Azren stated.

Beyond the current monsoon season, authorities are also preparing for the upcoming southwest monsoon, which is expected to bring extreme heat similar to last year. The DID has urged early planning for water conservation, particularly for agricultural and industrial sectors. “It is crucial to prepare now to ensure sufficient water resources during the dry season,” Azren added.

According to Johor Climate Change and State Disaster Management Select Committee Chairman Anuar Abd Manap, Johor will experience three monsoon waves, with the third wave being the longest and most severe. “We have completed the first wave and are currently bracing for the second. The third wave, expected between February and March, will require extensive preparedness,” Anuar said.

The Welfare Department has already begun stockpiling emergency supplies at temporary relief centers for those affected by potential flooding. Meanwhile, the Johor government is awaiting financial aid from Nadma to assist flood victims in recently affected areas. “So far, no reports of asset damage have been received, but any issues will be handled by the relevant agencies,” Anuar reassured.

Johor’s proactive flood management efforts highlight its commitment to climate resilience. With new water pumps set to arrive, coordinated disaster response measures in place, and a focus on water conservation post-monsoon, Johor is taking decisive action to combat extreme weather events.
