Johor Couple Faces Death Penalty for Alleged MDMA Trafficking

A Johor Bahru couple has been charged with trafficking 14.42kg of MDMA worth RM2.4 million ($720,000 SGD). The pair, arrested during a police operation in Skudai, also face possession charges for smaller quantities of ketamine and methamphetamine. If convicted, they could face the death penalty or life imprisonment.

 

The arrests took place during a special operation in Skudai on December 28, 2024. The couple, Cheng Ee Fei, 32, and Chan Pei Een, 34, were caught with 14.42kg of MDMA in their black Toyota Vios. Additional charges of possession were filed for smaller quantities of ketamine and methamphetamine.

 

The Arrest and Seizure

Police apprehended the couple at 12:30 am in a car park on Jalan Persiaran Mutiara Mas. A thorough search of their vehicle revealed 14.42kg of MDMA valued at RM2.4M ($720,000 SGD).

The couple was charged under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, along with up to 15 strokes of the cane. Additional charges for possession of 24.58g of ketamine and 2.75g of methamphetamine could result in fines up to RM100,000 ($30,000 SGD) or five years’ imprisonment.
