50% of Foreign Visitors to Batam in 2024 Are Singaporeans
Batam, Indonesia, witnessed an 8.23% surge in foreign tourist arrivals during the January–November 2024 period compared to the previous year. According to Batam’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Singaporeans accounted for over 50% of the 1.16 million international visitors, marking Batam’s growing appeal as a tourism hotspot.
Batam City, located in Indonesia’s Riau Islands Province, has long been recognized as both an industrial and tourist hub. With its proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, the city has become a favorite weekend getaway for foreign visitors. New data from BPS highlights continued growth in tourism numbers, showcasing Batam’s recovery from the pandemic’s impact.
Tourism Numbers Show Significant Growth
Foreign tourist arrivals to Batam rose from 1,043,078 in January–November 2023 to 1,166,849 during the same period in 2024, reflecting an 8.23% increase. In November 2024 alone, 112,641 tourists visited Batam, up from 110,677 in October.

Singapore Leads as Key Market
Singaporean tourists made up 52.31% of Batam’s foreign visitors in November 2024, totaling 58,917 arrivals. Malaysia followed with 24,375 visitors, while China, India, and the Philippines contributed smaller but steady numbers.
Rising Hotel Occupancy Rates
The occupancy rate of starred hotels in Riau Islands Province increased to 57.98% in November 2024, up from 55.66% in October. This growth indicates a revival in tourism-related hospitality, though the average length of stay slightly declined to 1.86 days.
Batam’s Dual Identity: Industrial and Tourism City
Once known solely for its industrial base, Batam has diversified into a thriving tourism destination. Pre-pandemic, it ranked as Indonesia’s second-most visited city for foreign tourists, a reputation it is steadily reclaiming.
