Potential Disruptions in Transport and Daily Life Expected in Key Areas
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning about potential tidal flooding, or rob, in Batam and other coastal areas in the Riau Islands (Kepri). This phenomenon, caused by the perigee phase and a full moon, is predicted to peak from January 12 to 18, 2025.
On January 7, 2025, the perigee phase—the moon’s closest point to Earth—combined with a full moon on January 13, is set to raise maximum tidal levels. This poses risks of coastal flooding, especially for communities in Batam, Lingga, Tanjungpinang, Bintan, and Tanjung Balai Karimun. Authorities warn of disruptions to port activities, coastal transportation, and daily life in these areas.
BMKG Hang Nadim Batam anticipates coastal flooding from January 12 to 18 in Batam, Lingga, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Tanjungpinang, and Bintan. The phenomenon results from increased tidal surges due to the perigee and full moon alignment.

Key areas at risk include Batu Aji, Batu Ampar, Sekupang, and Nongsa in Batam; Singkep Barat and Senayang in Lingga; and coastal areas in Tanjungpinang and Karimun. These locations are urged to prepare for potential impacts.
Coastal flooding could disrupt port operations, impact fishing activities, and delay logistics in affected regions. Communities reliant on these activities are advised to exercise caution and plan accordingly.
BMKG also cautions against extreme weather, including high winds and rough seas, which could further hinder maritime and aviation transport.
