Technical failures at JB CIQ disrupt travel, leaving thousands in long immigration queues.

Johor Bahru experienced severe travel disruptions on December 8, as technical failures at Sultan Iskandar Building’s (BSI) e-gates left thousands of travelers stranded for hours. The outage, which affected 42 gates, forced manual immigration clearance, creating massive queues.

The Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) immigration checkpoint in Johor Bahru, one of the busiest crossings into Singapore, was brought to a standstill due to a glitch affecting electronic gates. The failure created chaos during the weekend school holiday rush, straining travelers and officials alike.

The e-gates went offline at approximately 12:30 PM, affecting 42 autogates across the bus halls and KTM station. Travelers faced delays of up to four hours as Malaysian immigration officers manually processed entries and exits.

Photos and videos from the scene depicted long queues that stretched for hours, with thousands waiting to clear immigration. Affected travelers expressed frustration, calling the delays “not worth the hassle.”

Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) advised travelers to postpone their trips to Johor Bahru to ease congestion. By 3:55 PM, ICA reported that traffic had started to subside but advised travelers to check conditions before departing.

The e-gates were gradually reactivated, and by Monday, December 9, all were operational. Crowds at the BSI checkpoint began to dissipate, alleviating the weekend’s travel chaos.

The disruption, although temporary, highlighted the vulnerabilities of reliance on technology for border processing, particularly at a high-traffic checkpoint like Sultan Iskandar Building. The incident underscores the importance of having robust contingency measures in place.

The incident serves as a reminder to plan travel with potential delays in mind. While the e-gates have been restored, authorities must enhance system reliability and backup procedures to prevent future disruptions.

A technical glitch at Sultan Iskandar Building’s e-gates on December 8 caused massive delays, leaving thousands stranded. While the issue has been resolved, the incident underscores the need for improved contingency planning at one of Southeast Asia’s busiest checkpoints.
