Johor Bahru, November 20 — A Singaporean woman’s leisure trip to Johor Bahru turned into a distressing experience when a male staff member at Hako Hotel Mount Austin entered her room without consent. The guest, surnamed Lin, reported feeling “shocked” and “violated” following the incident, which highlighted serious lapses in the hotel’s privacy and safety protocols.

The incident occurred during Lin’s stay at Hako Hotel in Mount Austin, Johor Bahru, from November 8 to 10, 2024. Lin, 33, was traveling with friends and had booked two rooms for the trip. The male staff entered Lin’s room without her consent, citing an “accidental” misunderstanding.

Lin had just finished showering when a male hotel staff member suddenly entered her room. Although the “Do Not Disturb” light was on, the staff claimed he believed the room was vacated as there was no response to his knock. Lin revealed that the faulty door lock prevented her from securing the room.

Lin reported other issues, including a blocked shower drain filled with hair, which she and her friends had to clean themselves. Additionally, poor sound insulation in the room caused significant disturbance from music downstairs, as the hotel is located in the same building as a karaoke lounge.

The lack of privacy and unresolved maintenance problems left Lin feeling deeply frustrated. She emphasized the psychological impact of the privacy violation, which overshadowed her trip.

Hako Hotel issued a formal apology on Facebook, acknowledging the incident as a failure to meet their “high standards.” The hotel promised to enhance its protocols to prevent similar occurrences and expressed regret for the guest’s discomfort and distress.

The hotel stated it has reached out to Lin personally, offering apologies and support. They pledged to address operational shortcomings to restore guest confidence in their services.

This incident highlights critical gaps in hotel privacy and security protocols, raising concerns for travelers, especially women, about their safety while staying in budget accommodations. Singaporeans and international visitors should remain vigilant and report safety issues promptly.
