In a stringent move against illegal labor practices, Batam authorities have arrested two individuals linked to the illegal dispatch of Indonesian migrant workers to Malaysia, highlighting the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens’ rights abroad.


The Riau Islands Police’s environmental and water unit apprehended two suspects for illegally sending Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) to Malaysia, utilizing laws designed to protect workers from such exploitation.


On November 15, 2024, police in Batam arrested Samsul Bahri and Hafizah for organizing the departure of three migrant workers from Nusa Tenggara Barat to Malaysia without proper procedures, exposing the workers to potential exploitation and legal issues.

The suspects are charged under the Migrant Worker Protection Act, revised in 2023, facing up to 10 years in prison and fines up to IDR 15 billion, reflecting the severity of the offense under Indonesian law.


During their operation, police seized several items from the suspects, including bank books, ATM cards, cash, flight tickets, and mobile phones, which were used to coordinate the illegal migration.
