Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has reported a substantial 42% decline in its first-half net profits, primarily due to the absence of a significant one-time gain from last year, even as it forecasts growth in its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) for FY25.

On Wednesday, SingTel announced a significant decrease in its net profit for the first half of the fiscal year, attributing the drop to the non-recurrence of a substantial gain from a merger the previous year. Despite this setback, Southeast Asia’s largest telecom operator remains optimistic about its financial outlook for FY25.

SingTel’s net profit for the six months ending September 30 was S$1.23 billion, a sharp decline from S$2.14 billion the previous year. This fall was mainly due to the absence of a S$1.2 billion gain from the merger of Telkomsel with IndiHome, which boosted figures in the prior period.

The company is projecting a low double-digit growth in its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) for fiscal 2025, indicating a recovery and potential growth in profitability despite current challenges.

CEO Yuen Kuan Moon highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance revenue streams through artificial intelligence and data centres. SingTel’s NCS and Nxera brands are set to play crucial roles in advancing AI adoption across the region.

SingTel’s Australian unit, Optus, reported stable interim operating revenue of A$4.02 billion, despite being involved in a legal dispute with the country’s competition watchdog. This stability suggests resilience in its operations amidst external challenges.

Reflecting a commitment to shareholder returns, SingTel increased its interim dividend to 7 Singapore cents per share, up from 5.2 cents the previous year, signaling confidence in its financial management and future prospects.

While SingTel faces immediate financial hurdles, its strategic investments in technology and infrastructure, coupled with an optimistic financial outlook for the coming year, suggest a robust path forward. This approach not only reinforces SingTel’s commitment to innovation but also positions it well to capitalize on future tech-driven opportunities.

Despite a 42% decrease in interim net profits due to non-recurring gains from the previous year, SingTel is optimistic about future growth, projecting an increase in EBIT for FY25. The telecom giant continues to invest in AI and data center capabilities, reflecting its strategic focus on technological advancements and market leadership.
