The city of Batam is set to receive a significant boost in tourism with the initiation of direct flights from Incheon, South Korea, beginning on October 27, 2024. The new service is anticipated to enhance visitor numbers and foster stronger bilateral ties between Indonesia and South Korea.

The announcement was made by Ardiwinata, the Head of Batam’s Tourism Department, who expressed optimism about the potential surge in international tourists, particularly from South Korea, which has historically been one of Batam’s largest tourist markets.

Batam has set an ambitious target of attracting 2 million international visitors in 2024, but as of August, the numbers were just 800,000. The direct flight connection is seen as a crucial strategy to meet these targets, especially recovering post-pandemic tourism flows.

Before the pandemic, South Korean tourists were among the top visitors to Batam. The new flight route is expected to revitalize this market, bringing in tourists who are already familiar with and appreciative of what Batam has to offer.

The direct flights from Incheon will significantly enhance accessibility, making it easier for tourists to visit Batam. This aligns with the tourism industry’s focus on the three critical elements: accessibility, amenities, and attractions.

The route will be operated by Jejuair in collaboration with Indonesia’s Lion Group under a codeshare agreement, ensuring a seamless travel experience for visitors from South Korea and potentially other connecting countries.
