Indonesia Launches Special Economic Zone for Health and Tourism in Batam

On October 7, 2024, President Joko Widodo officially established the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Tourism and Health in Batam, aiming to enhance regional development and attract significant investments.


The new SEZ in Batam is strategically divided into two areas: Sekupang and Nongsa, focusing on integrated health services and tourism, respectively. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Indonesia’s economic diversity and regional competitiveness.


Spanning 47.17 hectares, the SEZ includes Sekupang, dedicated to health tourism with a comprehensive medical facility plan, and Nongsa, focusing on recreational tourism.

The SEZ is projected to attract Rp 6.91 trillion in investment by 2032, creating over 105,000 jobs, signaling significant economic growth for Batam and beyond.


Sekupang will house the Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital and related healthcare education facilities, setting a new standard for medical care in the region.


Nongsa will develop as a leisure destination featuring a Retirement Village & Clinic and various accommodations catering to tourists and medical patients.
