Israel has initiated a ground operation in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah strongholds. This strategic move, taking place in the early hours of October 1, 2024, is accompanied by aerial bombardments, marking a significant escalation in military activities.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have declared the commencement of a ground operation in southern Lebanon, aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure. This operation is described as “limited, localized, and directed,” focusing on immediate threats near the Israeli border. The campaign includes both ground assaults and precise aerial strikes.
The operation began just after 02:00 local time on October 1, 2024. Initial reports from the Lebanese Ministry of Health indicate at least 95 fatalities and 172 injuries resulting from the onslaught. The conflict has already displaced up to one million people in the past two weeks.

The IDF supports ground troops with airstrikes targeting military installations in the area. The aim is to neutralize Hezbollah’s capabilities that pose a direct threat to Israeli communities. The strategic use of both air and artillery forces highlights the multifaceted approach of the Israeli military.
Hezbollah, heavily armed and funded by Iran, is considered one of the most formidable non-state military forces globally. With estimates of up to 200,000 rockets and missiles, their ability to retaliate against Israeli cities remains significant, raising concerns about a wider regional escalation.
The operation comes just days after the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Unlike during the 2006 Lebanon War, Israel now possesses superior military capabilities and intelligence. However, it faces a well-trained and battle-hardened Hezbollah, which has gained significant combat experience in Syria’s civil war.

The conflict could potentially draw in other Iranian proxies in the region, such as the Houthis in Yemen and militia groups in Syria and Iraq, posing a risk to broader regional stability and U.S. military interests.
The Israeli operation in Lebanon marks a critical and potentially volatile phase in the region’s security dynamics. While the IDF asserts that the operation is limited, the complexity of the geopolitical environment and Hezbollah’s capabilities suggest a challenging confrontation ahead.
Israel’s recent ground operation in Lebanon, supported by precise airstrikes, targets Hezbollah with the aim of mitigating threats to Israeli security. The operation has resulted in significant casualties and displacements, with implications for regional stability and the potential involvement of other militant groups allied with Iran.
