Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is optimistic that a new visa relaxation scheme will substantially increase tourist arrivals to Batam, aiming to meet ambitious targets.
Amidst underwhelming tourist numbers compared to annual targets, Batam, part of the Riau Archipelago, has been identified as a key area for potential growth in international visits. The Ministry is in the final stages of implementing a relaxed visa policy to stimulate this growth.
As reported by the Central Statistics Agency, the Riau Archipelago ranks third in Indonesia for international tourist visits, with significant contributions from Batam. However, current figures are still far from the targeted three million international visitors.
The proposed Visa on Arrival (VoA) adjustment includes potentially significant changes in duration and cost, aimed particularly at tourists from neighboring Singapore, from where Batam can easily attract over two million visitors.
Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno has been actively involved in the finalization and promotion of the new visa scheme, suggesting it will facilitate easier and more cost-effective visits to Batam and potentially boost local economies.
Alongside the visa changes, Batam has been enhancing its infrastructure and hosting more international-scale events to attract tourists, including sports and music events.
