The KPU Bea Cukai Batam, in a significant operation aided by K-9 units, has successfully intercepted a methamphetamine smuggling attempt, disguised in tea packages inside a fuel tank.
On a routine sea patrol, Batam’s Customs K-9 units, Joany and Ramber, played a crucial role in detecting 106 packages of methamphetamine cleverly concealed within tea bags, meant to be smuggled into Indonesia.
The operation involved a sea patrol on July 13, 2024, during which the K-9 units were alerted to suspicious activity on the vessel ‘Legend Aquarius,’ leading to the discovery of the drugs.

Joany and Ramber, the trained dogs from the KPU Bea Cukai Batam’s K-9 unit, were instrumental in identifying the hidden drugs, showcasing the effectiveness of using trained animals in customs enforcement.
The smugglers attempted to disguise the methamphetamine within tea bags placed inside a fuel tank, highlighting innovative smuggling methods that law enforcement must contend with.
This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities in combating drug trafficking in the region, a crucial entry point for illegal substances.
