In a medical breakthrough for the Riau Islands, the RSBP Batam Hospital successfully conducted its first-ever Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) procedure on July 5, 2024, marking a significant advancement in local healthcare capabilities.

This landmark operation was performed by Batam’s sole Heart and Vascular Specialist-Consultant in Arrhythmia, Dr. Fandi Ahmad, SpJP(K), in collaboration with Dr. Agung Fabian, SpJP(K), Secretary-General of the Indonesian Association of Arrhythmia Specialists, reflecting a crucial skill transfer and experience-sharing effort within Indonesia’s medical community.

The patient, a 39-year-old man, was urgently brought to the hospital after his wife found him in a state of seizure and unconsciousness, lasting approximately two minutes.

Further medical examinations at RSBP Batam’s Emergency Unit using an ECG revealed he was suffering from Brugada Syndrome—a life-threatening genetic heart rhythm disorder.

The ICD device, implanted directly into the heart via a minor chest incision, is designed to prevent sudden cardiac arrest by delivering electrical shocks to normalize heart rhythms.

Dr. Fandi emphasized the importance of regular Medical Check-Ups, especially heart screening (EKG), for early detection of such severe conditions and advised maintaining a healthy lifestyle to protect heart health.
