Batam Faces 9.83% Electricity Tariff Hike Amid Business Concerns

In Batam, businesses are grappling with a significant electricity tariff increase of 6-9.83%, effective from July 2024. This hike is seen as a substantial burden on operational costs amidst other rising expenses. The local business community is pressing for improved services, including a guarantee against rolling blackouts, which have been a frequent issue.

The increase in electricity tariffs in Batam has been set by PLN Batam and is part of a broader government strategy to manage energy costs while protecting less affluent consumers. The new rates will affect 11 customer categories, with increases ranging from 6% to 9.83%, depending on the consumption and customer type, including residential, business, and government sectors.

Rafki Rasyid, Chairman of the Indonesian Entrepreneurs Association in Batam, emphasizes that the rate hike will considerably impact business operations and insists on improved utility services to mitigate the financial burden.

M Irwansyah, Director of PLN Batam, states that the adjustments are necessary to keep up with Batam’s economic growth and increasing energy demands, projected to rise by 10-15% in 2024.
