As Eid al-Adha approaches, the Batam City Industry and Trade Office (Disperindag) is set to launch a series of discounted market operations. This initiative aims to prevent a spike in commodity prices and ensure affordability during the festive period.
Scheduled for June 13 and 14, 2024, the operations will cover four districts in Batam, focusing on areas with high population densities to maximize impact. The move is part of a broader effort by local authorities to support residents during significant religious festivities.
The first phase of these market operations will take place in Batam City, Bengkong, Batuaji, and Sagulung, chosen for their dense populations and greater potential for price hikes.

A variety of essential goods will be available at reduced prices, including rice, cooking oil, sugar, eggs, chili, onions, chicken, beef, fresh and canned fish, fruits, flour, biscuits, noodles, and even LPG gas.
By collaborating with the Batam Association of Basic Goods Distributors, Disperindag ensures that prices at these markets are equivalent to wholesale rates, providing significant savings compared to regular market prices.
Local government anticipates a positive reception from the community, as these market operations provide substantial relief from the rising costs of basic necessities, especially during economic uncertainties.
These operations are part of a continuous effort by the Batam government to stabilize the local economy and support the community’s lower-income segments, showcasing a proactive approach to economic management.
The initiative by Batam’s local government to control commodity prices during Eid al-Adha reflects a commitment to social welfare that could serve as a model for other regions. For Singaporeans and international observers, this provides insights into regional economic strategies and cross-border economic dynamics in the area.
To combat potential price hikes during Eid al-Adha, Batam’s Disperindag will conduct discounted market operations across four districts, ensuring residents have access to affordable essential goods during the festive season.
