Batam Customs has successfully intercepted a shipment of used Harley Davidson motorcycle parts at Batu Ampar Port, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat illegal imports. This operation underscores the challenges and complexities involved in regulating international trade and safeguarding national borders.
On the last Wednesday of May 2024, Batam Customs officers received a tip-off about an attempt to illegally import used motorcycle parts by PT AP, a company registered as a general importer. This led to a thorough investigation and the eventual seizure of the contraband.
Customs officials discovered six Harley Davidson engines, frames, and various accessories, all used, concealed among officially declared goods. These items were found hidden in five pallets during a routine check.
The smuggling of these goods is governed by Article 102(a) of the Indonesian Customs Law, which carries a minimum sentence of one year and a maximum of ten years in prison, along with fines ranging from approximately SGD 4,200 (IDR 50 million) to SGD 420,000 (IDR 5 billion).
The seized goods were transported to the Batam Customs warehouse in Tanjung Uncang for secure storage as the legal proceedings commenced against the perpetrators involved in the smuggling operation.
Evi Octavia, Head of Compliance Guidance and Information Services at Batam Customs, emphasized the agency’s commitment to preventing smuggling to protect the community and secure the state’s revenue.
