The open unemployment rate in Batam, Riau Islands Province, saw a significant decrease in 2023, falling by 1.42 percent. This reduction in unemployment has contributed to a decline in poverty levels in the city, according to the latest data from Batam’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

In 2023, Batam experienced a drop in its open unemployment rate to 8.14 percent from 9.56 percent in the previous year, reflecting broader economic improvements, particularly in the industrial and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sectors.

Eko Aprianto, the head of BPS Batam, reported that the workforce participation rate was 69.63 percent, equating to 641,605 working individuals out of a total working-age population of 921,425.

The decrease in unemployment has been partly attributed to the expanding industrial sector and the proliferation of SMEs, which have been successful in absorbing more labor, thereby reducing unemployment figures.

In Batam, the majority of the workforce in 2023 comprised individuals with high school-level education, accounting for 35.38 percent, followed by vocational school graduates at 22.94 percent, and university graduates at 13.74 percent.

The poverty rate in Batam also decreased to 5.02 percent, representing approximately 83,000 individuals, down from 5.12 percent in 2022. The poverty line was set at a monthly consumption value of SGD 71.81 (IDR 854,465) per capita.

Despite these positive trends, the economic landscape is susceptible to external shocks, such as global market fluctuations and geopolitical conflicts, which could impact Batam’s export sectors and overall economic health.

The economic developments in Batam have implications for regional stability and economic integration, particularly for Singaporeans and international businesses looking at investment opportunities or labor markets in the region.

Batam’s unemployment and poverty rates have decreased due to effective economic policies and growth in key sectors. However, ongoing global economic challenges could influence future outcomes.
