During the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, held from May 18-25, 2024, Indonesian Minister of Public Works and Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono, alongside Singapore’s Senior Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Amy Khor, engaged in crucial bilateral talks focused on enhancing coastal security and flood management strategies to protect Java’s northern coast.
The bilateral meeting highlighted the shared challenges and collaborative efforts between Indonesia and Singapore in addressing environmental and infrastructural vulnerabilities, particularly in the Java North Coast region, which is increasingly threatened by erosion and flooding.
Minister Basuki emphasized that all of Indonesia’s coastlines, especially Java’s northern coast, are a priority and require fortified defenses to prevent further erosion and potential flooding.

Both nations agreed to share knowledge and experiences in coastal protection, recognizing the need for improved infrastructure and advanced methodologies.
Minister Amy Khor detailed Singapore’s advanced flood management systems, including the construction of 15 Olympic-sized underground reservoirs for rainwater collection, showcasing a proactive approach to environmental challenges.
The talks paved the way for deeper cooperation in environmental management, with both countries expressing a keen interest in learning from each other’s successes and challenges.
