The United Nations, through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), has issued a stark warning about the severe impacts of climate change in Asia, as detailed in the 2023 State of the Climate in Asia report. This comprehensive analysis paints a troubling picture of escalating climate indicators, from rising temperatures to glacier melts and sea-level increases.
The 2023 WMO report analyses disasters from the previous year, emphasizing that Asia is experiencing an accelerated pace of climate change. This includes extreme weather events that have significantly affected the region’s population, economy, and ecosystems.
The report highlights that many Asian countries, including Indonesia, experienced their hottest year on record in 2023, accompanied by severe droughts, heatwaves, floods, and storms.

According to the Emergency Events Database, Asia saw 79 such disasters in 2023, with over 80% involving floods and storms, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths and affecting nine million people.
The intense heat has posed significant health risks across the region, though, fortuitously, no deaths were specifically reported due to the extreme temperatures in the report.
The report also notes a concerning rise in sea levels from January 1993 to May 2023, with many areas, including Indonesia, recording higher-than-average global mean sea levels.

The implications of these findings are profound. They indicate a clear need for urgent action to mitigate climate effects and adapt to the new realities, particularly in vulnerable regions like Indonesia.
The findings of the WMO report underscore the escalating threats posed by climate change in the region. This heightened risk calls for increased resilience and preparedness strategies to safeguard lives and livelihoods in Asia, particularly in highly vulnerable areas like Indonesia.
The UN’s latest climate report warns of severe impacts from ongoing climate change in Asia, highlighting record temperatures and increased frequency of extreme weather events. The analysis points to significant challenges for the region, urging immediate action to address these pressing environmental concerns.
