In a significant move toward bolstering economic cooperation, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has expressed readiness to assist Indonesia in its efforts to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This commitment was made during a friendly visit by Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to Japan on April 3, 2024, signaling a deepening of bilateral relations between the two nations across various sectors including infrastructure development, energy, and security.

The OECD, a forum emphasizing the importance of collaboration and the creation of global standards, could soon see Indonesia as a member, thanks to Japan’s pledge of support. This development follows the OECD Council’s decision to commence accession discussions with Indonesia, recognizing its longstanding partnership and contributions since 2007.

Japan’s offer extends beyond OECD accession support, encompassing commitments to enhance security cooperation, including the provision of patrol vessels, and to foster infrastructure and energy development in Indonesia.

Both leaders also discussed pressing regional issues, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and agreed to continue collaboration on regional security concerns.

Prime Minister Kishida reiterated Japan’s intention to maintain close cooperation with ASEAN, leveraging outcomes from the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit held in December 2023, underscoring Japan’s strategic interest in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia’s OECD membership bid is part of a broader effort to engage more deeply with global institutions, reflecting its ambitions to play a more significant role on the world stage and to adopt policies that are progressive and globally accepted.
