Eight Indonesians and eight Bangladeshis intercepted after speedboat lands on Riau coast from Malaysia.

Indonesia’s maritime authorities have disrupted another unauthorized movement across the Strait of Malacca. A speedboat carrying 16 people from Malaysia was intercepted after reaching the coast of Dumai, Riau, highlighting the continued use of unofficial sea routes for cross-border migration between the two countries.

16 People Intercepted on Dumai Coast
A joint Indonesian Navy team intercepted eight non-procedural Indonesian migrant workers and eight Bangladeshi nationals at Purnama Beach in West Dumai on August 31. The operation involved the Dumai Naval Base Quick Response Team, Kodaeral I maritime intelligence personnel and Koarmada I’s intelligence operations task force. The group had traveled by speedboat from Malaysia and attempted to enter Indonesia outside an official immigration checkpoint.

Speedboat Detected After Intelligence Tip
The operation began after authorities received information on August 30 about plans to transport Indonesian workers and foreign nationals from Malaysia to Dumai through an unofficial coastal route. At around 6 a.m. the following day, officers detected a gray speedboat powered by two 200-horsepower engines approaching Purnama Beach at high speed. Personnel moved in after the vessel landed.

Passengers Attempt to Escape
The passengers and the boat operator attempted to flee toward the shore when officers approached. Authorities initially detained three Indonesian migrant workers and secured the speedboat before searching the surrounding coastline and residential areas. The operation subsequently located another five Indonesians and all eight Bangladeshi nationals, bringing the number intercepted to 16. The boat operator escaped, but authorities said his identity had been established and he remained wanted.

Passengers Paid Millions for Illegal Crossing
According to statements provided to authorities, the passengers said they were charged between Rp6.5 million and Rp9.5 million each to travel from Malaysia to Indonesia through the unofficial route. The Indonesian workers reportedly came from several regions, including Sulawesi, Medan and Java. Officers also seized the speedboat, passports, identification documents and mobile phones during the operation.

Authorities Investigate Cross-Border Route
The eight Indonesian migrant workers are being handled through the P4MI migrant worker protection service in Dumai, while the eight Bangladeshi nationals were transferred to immigration authorities for further processing. The Indonesian Navy said the operation formed part of its efforts to secure border waters and prevent human trafficking and the smuggling of foreign workers.

The interception demonstrates the continuing challenge of policing unofficial maritime routes connecting Malaysia and Indonesia. For Indonesians, the case highlights the risks faced by migrant workers using non-procedural channels, where passengers can become vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking.
