In a notable humanitarian effort, the Medical Emergency Rescue-Committee (MER-C) of Indonesia, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has successfully dispatched a medical team to the Gaza Strip amidst ongoing conflict. This mission aims to address the escalating health crisis in the region, particularly during the sacred month of Ramadan, as hostilities between Israel and Hamas persist.

Amidst the backdrop of sustained conflict, this mission underscores the critical need for medical assistance in war-torn regions and highlights the challenges faced by humanitarian workers in delivering aid.
The MER-C Indonesia team, consisting of 11 doctors and nurses, has joined forces with WHO to form an “Emergency Medical Team” (EMT), aiming to provide crucial medical services in the Gaza Strip. Their presence is a beacon of hope in a region desperate for healthcare support.

Despite the complex security situation, the team’s entry was facilitated through diplomatic channels, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in humanitarian missions. Their work is focused in the southern city of Rafah, under the authorization of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, due to restrictions in the northern and central regions of Gaza.
The mission’s duration is set between two weeks to a month, with plans for subsequent teams to follow, ensuring continued medical assistance. This rotation strategy underlines the long-term commitment of MER-C Indonesia and its partners to the people of Gaza.
Sarbini Abdul Murad, the Chair of MER-C’s Presidium, has called for a consortium or coalition to enhance the delivery of medical teams to Gaza, urging all stakeholders in the healthcare sector to contribute to this large-scale effort.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Middle East Director Bagus Hendraning Kobarsyih, has expressed openness to exploring all options that alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, including the potential establishment of a field hospital, underscoring the multi-faceted approach needed to address the health crisis.
The collaborative mission between MER-C Indonesia and WHO in Gaza not only highlights the urgent need for medical aid in conflict zones but also the pivotal role of international solidarity in addressing global health crises. It serves as a poignant reminder of the humanitarian spirit that transcends borders, offering lessons in empathy, cooperation, and the importance of sustained efforts in times of need.
