In a startling revelation, a senior officer of the Kepulauan Riau Police Department (Polda Kepri), identified as AKBP HR, is suspected of being involved in the smuggling of a container filled with various brands of alcoholic beverages, estimated to be worth SGD 595,000. This case has stirred significant attention due to its potential implications on law enforcement integrity and cross-border trade regulations.

The smuggling operation was uncovered when a container loaded with alcoholic drinks, allegedly ordered by a nightclub entrepreneur in Batam, was traced back to AKBP HR. The goods were procured from PT Thom Hilss PTE. LTD. in Singapore and were transported by PT Legend Marine Indonesia, following arrangements made by Andika of CV Blessing Indo Star.

Batam Customs investigators have pinpointed two suspects, Andika and a man identified as T, in connection with the smuggling. Andika is believed to be the supplier of alcoholic beverages to Batam, while T is suspected of facilitating the transportation logistics from Singapore to Batam.

Further investigation suggests the involvement of customs officials who allegedly allowed the container to pass through checks inadequately, leveraging a possibly forged Surat Pemberitahuan Pengeluaran Barang (SPPB) and evading thorough inspections at the port of entry.

The case has also revealed the possible existence of a more extensive mafia network, previously targeted by Customs Headquarters intelligence from Jakarta. This network’s operations became evident when armed police were found guarding the container, leading to its seizure and re-examination by authorities.

In response to these allegations, Kombes. Pol. Zahwani Pandra Arsyad, S.H., M.Si., the Public Relations Head of Polda Kepri, emphasized the department’s commitment to strict action against any member found complicit. However, details regarding internal actions or further investigations remain undisclosed.

The smuggling incident sheds light on the challenges facing customs and border protection agencies, highlighting the need for enhanced scrutiny and cooperation between Indonesian and Singaporean authorities to curb such illicit activities.

This smuggling case not only poses questions about law enforcement’s role in facilitating or combating cross-border crime but also underlines the broader implications for Singaporeans and international visitors. The incident may lead to stricter customs checks and heightened security measures at ports, potentially affecting trade and travel between Indonesia and Singapore.

A high-ranking officer from the Kepulauan Riau Police Department, AKBP HR, is under investigation for allegedly facilitating the smuggling of alcoholic beverages worth SGD 595,000 from Singapore to Batam. The case, involving potential complicity by customs officials and a broader criminal network, highlights significant challenges in regional security and law enforcement collaboration.
