In a landmark move aimed at fostering closer people-to-people ties, the Islamic Republic of Iran has announced a visa-free policy for Indonesian citizens starting Tuesday, 7th February 2024. This policy, heralded during the 45th celebration of Iran’s National Day in Jakarta, is expected to significantly enhance bilateral relations between the two nations.
The visa exemption marks a pivotal moment in the diplomatic relationship between Iran and Indonesia, following the visit of Iranian President Sayyed Ebrahim Raisi to Indonesia in May 2023. This visit witnessed the signing of 11 bilateral cooperation documents, setting the stage for this significant policy shift.
The visa-free initiative is part of Iran’s broader strategy to deepen its interaction and cooperation with countries in South and East Asia, emphasizing its desire to build stronger, more expansive relations globally, particularly with nations sharing similar visions of peace and harmony.
Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, highlighted the exemption as a step towards enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation, stating that Indonesian passport holders can now visit Iran without a visa, reflecting Iran’s commitment to strengthening people-to-people connections.
The cooperation extends beyond visa policies, with both nations agreeing on 11 commitments in areas including trade, banking, energy, sports, and culture, showcasing the multifaceted nature of their relationship.
Iran is also seeking to elevate its partnership with the ASEAN region, demonstrating the importance of Southeast Asia’s economic role and its efforts to engage more deeply with regional institutions.
