Batam Celebrates Lunar New Year with a Surge in Chinese Imports

As the Lunar New Year 2575 approaches, the city of Batam is adorned with a vibrant display of red decorations, with shopping centers bustling with an array of imported goods from China to mark the Year of the Wood Dragon. This celebration not only enriches the cultural tapestry of Batam but also promises a boost in tourism and international relations.

The festivities have transformed shopping centers like BCS Mall into hubs of Lunar New Year preparation, with everything from lanterns, red decorations, and angpao envelopes to various dragon-themed items filling the shelves.

Prices of angpao envelopes range from SGD 0.17 to SGD 1.54 per pack, with diverse contents, while stickers and other decorations are priced between SGD 1.29 and SGD 3.44. Small-sized Lunar New Year lanterns are available for SGD 21.5, and the larger, more elaborate ones can go up to SGD 154.8.

Merchants like Wati have noted a significant uptick in sales as the holiday draws nearer, with angpao envelopes emerging as the top-selling item. The demand for Lunar New Year merchandise has surged, especially for dragon-themed angpaos, reflecting this year’s zodiac symbol.

All merchandise was ordered from China well in advance of the Lunar New Year, ensuring a wide but finite selection of goods for Batam’s celebrants.

The Head of the Batam Culture and Tourism Office, Ardiwinata, highlighted the Lunar New Year as a key driver of tourist visits to Batam. Despite coinciding with the election season, the celebrations have not dimmed, with areas like Nagoya decked out in festive decorations.
