The recent survey by the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) places Batam among the ten Indonesian cities with the highest monthly living costs, topping the list in Sumatra.

The BPS survey reveals that Jakarta leads the chart with the highest household consumption value at Rp14.88 million, increasing from Rp13.45 million in 2018.

Batam ranks ninth nationwide with an average consumption value of Rp10.03 million, indicating the city’s high cost of living.

The cost of living calculation considers various factors, including electricity tariffs, mobile phone credits, housing rent, gasoline, cooking oil, foodstuff, milk, among others.

Changes in the ranking from the 2018 survey highlight shifts in economic dynamics across different cities.

The lowest consumption values are recorded in regions such as Cilacap, Central Java, and Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
