In a significant crackdown on counterfeit currency, the Batam police have arrested a 65-year-old man, identified as HDS, for producing and circulating fake money in Sekupang, Batam.
The arrest followed a transaction at a local petrol station, where the suspect used counterfeit notes. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of currency fraud in the region.
The suspect, HDS, was apprehended after using fake Rp 5000 notes to purchase fuel at a petrol station in Sungai Harapan, Sekupang.

Investigations revealed HDS had created the counterfeit money at a kiosk behind his sales point, equipped with a printer, saw, sandpaper, and other tools.
Authorities found 41 completed counterfeit Rp 5000 notes and 45 incomplete ones at his residence, along with the equipment used for their production.
Another individual, Firdaus, was also involved, unknowingly using the counterfeit money under HDS’s instruction.

HDS faces charges under Indonesia’s currency laws, with potential penalties including a maximum of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to Rp 50 billion.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance against currency fraud in Indonesia and Singapore, particularly for small denominations that may not be scrutinized closely.
