As Indonesia’s Tiktok Shop ceases operations due to fresh governmental regulations, how do digital platform laws compare across the globe?

Starting from today, Tiktok Shop in Indonesia has halted its services in alignment with new governmental directives preventing social media platforms from operating e-commerce. This move prompts an examination of similar digital regulations in other countries.

The Ministry of Trade Regulation Number 31 of 2023 prohibits social commerce platforms from conducting transactions, limiting them to merely promoting goods or services. For Tiktok Shop to persist in Indonesia, it needs to acquire an e-commerce license.

Internationally, tightening of digital regulations is evident. The European Union introduced the Digital Service Act, focusing on content regulation, while the US proposed the RESTRICT Act, contemplating a nationwide Tiktok ban due to security concerns.

India and several other countries, including the UK and Canada, have either completely or partially banned Tiktok. Even in its homeland, China, Tiktok faces stringent regulations against monopolistic practices.

In China, where Tiktok is known as Douyin, the platform is restricted to local content. Foreign businesses aiming to penetrate the Douyin market need to have a Chinese business license or partner with a local agency. China’s intent is clear: protect domestic platforms and foster local growth before opening up to foreign investments.

Teten, Indonesia’s Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, enumerated six directions for the country’s digital transformation. From software industrialization and industry digitalization to advanced internet infrastructure and world-class digital talent cultivation, Indonesia is on a strategic path.

Indonesia’s evolving digital landscape signals a cautious environment for innovation. As countries navigate the balance between technology advancement and market protection, global digital enterprises might face mixed receptions in various territories.

Tiktok Shop’s cessation in Indonesia shines a spotlight on global digital regulations. As nations grapple with the blend of social media and e-commerce, the path to sustainable digital transformation remains a shared challenge.
